Why Are Major South Indian Producers Backing Kamal Haasan’s Bold Warning to Cinema?

With global tensions in West Asia driving up fuel and logistics costs, movie budgets are spinning out of control. Legendary actor and MP Kamal Haasan recently dropped a powerful open letter urging the Indian film fraternity to stop wasting money just to make movies look “big.” Instead of flying off to Paris or Switzerland for every love story, he wants filmmakers to trust local spots and focus on tight schedules, better planning, and cutting down on massive star entourages. Top production houses like Vyjayanthi Movies and veteran makers like Shibu Thameen immediately backed his call, agreeing that it is high time the industry embraces disciplined, smart filmmaking.

What makes Kamal Haasan’s approach stand out is his insistence that cutting costs should never hurt the everyday crew. He made it crystal clear that the wages, food, safety, and dignity of daily-wage workers are non-negotiable. Major South Indian producers are applauding this vision because it shifts the focus from mindless extravagance back to pure storytelling and solid script development. By keeping the budget on the screen rather than on luxury expenses, the industry hopes to protect its future, ensure theatres stay packed, and prove that India’s best films are built on great ideas rather than massive, wasteful price tags.
