The Next Global Craze? Indian Cinema.
SS Rajamouli is already looking past his next big release, Varanasi, which is set to hit theaters in 2027. In a recent chat with Fansango, the director shared his ambitious dream: he wants Indian cinema to have the same massive, cult-like global following as K-Pop or Japanese anime. He was particularly inspired by the success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle in India, which pulled in over ₹66 crore to become one of the top foreign films of 2025. To Rajamouli, if a Japanese anime can sell out theaters in India, there’s no reason Indian movies can’t do the same worldwide.Reflecting on the massive success of RRR, Rajamouli explained that his strategy is actually pretty simple: focus on honest, “sincere emotions” that anyone can relate to, regardless of where they live. He believes that making a story universal is the key to winning over a global audience, though he admits that seeing that belief actually come to life is the real challenge. Whether he’s talking about upcoming 2026 Hindi releases or his own Telugu projects, Rajamouli is clearly focused on making Indian movies a permanent fixture on the world stage.
