Mamata Banerjee Calls for Opposition Unity After Election Defeat, Says ‘Our First Enemy Is BJP’
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has called for greater unity among opposition parties following her party’s recent electoral setback. Speaking outside her Kalighat residence in Kolkata on May 9, Mamata urged anti-BJP forces to come together on a common platform to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party politically.
During her address, Mamata reportedly said that the BJP should be treated as the opposition’s “first enemy,” stressing the need for Left parties, student unions, regional groups and civil society organisations to work together despite ideological differences.
Her remarks come amid growing discussions about the future of opposition politics in India after the latest election results. Mamata stated that defeating the BJP would require collective effort rather than fragmented political battles.
The TMC chief also appealed to youth organisations and grassroots workers to strengthen coordination at the local level. Political observers believe her comments may signal renewed attempts to rebuild a broader anti-BJP alliance ahead of upcoming national political developments.
